Organizations of St. George's

ACOLYTES
Coordinators:
Monte Nelson & Shivaun Nelson

The Acolyte program, this year, has been going through a transitional phase.  The job of Acolyte Master has left the hand of Rand and fallen to me, Shivaun.  Our greatest achievements this year have been supplying great service to the many needs of various priests, getting all trained who had the desire, and keeping the group of Acolytes close during tough times.  During this year we’ve had about four trainings.  For our future goals, we hope to train all people who have an interest in Acolyting, continue the fellowship between Acolytes, and continue to serve each priest to their specific needs.

ALTAR GUILD
Directoress: Connie Van Wyck

The Altar Guild of St. George’s is a small, nurturing group, which is dedicated to inspiring spiritual growth throughout the parish. There are twenty-three members who meet the first Saturday of every other month. The Altar Guild meeting is followed by a luncheon given by the Directoress as a thank you to the group.

The goal of the Altar Guild is that their work is performed with devotion, which rises above pride and personality to serve God and friends in Christ. In the spirit of reverence they take care of the altar, sanctuary, sacristy, sacred vessels and vestments.

O God of beauty, love and peace, take us thankful for the privilege of adding beauty to Thy sanctuary, growing in love through Thy service, and gaining peace from Thy presence, through Jesus Christ, our Lord. Amen.

BUILDING AND GROUNDS
Coordinator: Stephen Franklin

1999 has been a good year. Two very significant completed projects are property sales and clean-up. St. George's completed the sale of two properties: one in Laguna Hills and the other, the former Rectory, in Lake Forest. The proceeds of the sales have been invested in the Diocesan Investment Trust, the earnings from which enables St. George's to provide a rector's housing allowance.

The clean-up of several rooms in the Carlota Building was a major task. So much "stuff" had been accumulating over the years we had to rent a huge steel container to hold it all in. The project was completed with the admirable leadership of James Deichman and the very willing support of the Men's Club. (Thank you everyone!)

I am eagerly awaiting the interesting set of challenges of the year 2000 as the remodeling of Hammond and Hasler Halls begins, the demolition of Carlota occurs and the ground is broken for Bourne Hall.

CHRISTIAN FORMATION
The Rev. Charlotte Cleghorn & Mary Franklin

The Christian Formation Committee is made up of eight people who meet monthly to plan all of the Adult Christian Formation programs as well as the Advent and Lenten evening programs.

Adult Christian Formation is offered every Sunday morning at 9:15am, usually in Hasler Hall. We have covered a myriad of topics including: “How To Raise Caring Children”; “The Wisdom of the Soul”; a study of the Lord’s Prayer; Practicing our Faith (looking at different aspects of the Christian life); “The Jesus I Never Knew”; and an intergenerational program that culminated in a service led by the participants.

Our goals for the new year are to plan programs and events that will contribute to our growth as the body of Christ; to supervise the Koinonia groups; to explore new possibilities for the parish including a parish retreat.

If you have an interest in Christian Formation, please join us, the fourth Monday of the month.

DAUGHTERS OF THE KING (DOK)
President: Pam Southern

Our meetings on the 3rd Thursday of each month, included celebrating Eucharist, fellowship & lunch. As part of our ministry we have furnished & put together the Newcomers bags. This year we started a prayer chain and card ministry for our members. This past year our members, approximately 20, were enriched by a weekend retreat and Advent Quiet Day and have enjoyed several guest speakers. Our goals for 2000 are to start an evening chapter and to open the prayer chain to the whole parish. Next month we will also be voting on a new service ministry reaching to people outside of the parish. We are excited to start our new years journey with St. George’s in our ministry of prayer, service and evangelism. In his Name…

EPISCOPAL CHURCH WOMEN (ECW)
President:
Mary Nichols

St. George’s Episcopal Church Women had an active year.  Our activities included Valentine’s Day renewal of wedding vows and cake; a Spring Ladies Tea; bus trip to the Getty Center; preparation of sack lunches for the Episcopal Service Alliance; participation in the German Fest with St. George’s Spirit and the Men’s Club; Book and Bake Sale and a terrific ingathering for the United Thank Offering.  In addition, the E.C.W. started a Book Club, with our members reading and reviewing a book each month.

The E.C.W. held twelve (12) regularly scheduled meetings during 1999.  While some of the meetings were sparsely attended, by the end of the year, we averaged approximately ten (10) ladies per meeting.  However, we had overwhelming attending at the Spring Tea, with over 70 ladies and children in attendance and approximately 40 people attending the Getty trip.

The year began under the capable leadership of Ramona Manofsky as President and Julie Shahan as Secretary/Treasurer.  In April, new officers were commissioned, including Mary Nichols as President; Donna Dice as Vice President and Julie Shahan as Secretary/Treasurer.  In addition, Norma Sharpe graciously agreed to undertake the task of coordinating the United Thank Offering Drive.

Our major accomplishments for 1999 included a very successful United Thank Offering drive, where $1,233.00 was collected for the missionary work of the Episcopal Church.  The E.C.W. has been supportive of all activities of the church by setting up tables and providing decorations for church functions, including Lenten and advent dinners; working with other ministries within the parish for the enjoyment of all, including the German Fest and Ministry Fair, and by planning and sponsoring special events, such as the Spring Tea and Getty Trip for the enjoyment of our church members.

Our goals for 2000 are to become more active in support of the work of St. George’s; to involve more parishioners into service at St. George’s, and to provide a forum for discussion, fellowship and worship for the women of this parish.

EPISCOPAL YOUTH COMMISSION (EYC)
Coordinator:
Judy Urban

No report filed.

FELLOWSHIP HALL (BOURNE HALL)
Coordinator:
James Deichmann

Thanks to all members for their help and assistance during 1999:  Susan Whitney-Heath, Margaret Scheppke, Gil Thweatt, Suzanne Thweatt, Barry Dasso, Joyce Howard, Chuck Day, Diane Victor, Ellie Gero, and The Reverends Albert Ogle and Marni Schneider.

As we look back on 1999, we have a lot to thank God for.  The master architectural plan was approved by the City of Laguna Hills.  We conducted a very well attended Town Hall meeting during which we presented three (3) different cost and completion options for Phase 1.  We received 53 parish surveys with 70% of the parish voting for “Finished Hall with Space for a Stage and Backstage”.

Looking ahead to this year we are excited about the church bathroom and Hasler Hall remodeling projects.  And we can’t wait to get started on Bourne Fellowship Hall.  We expect to break ground this summer, with construction taking approximately one (1) year.

I would like to thank everyone for your continued support and prayers.  We have a lot of work ahead of us, and we ask for your prayers.  Help us remember that Jesus was a carpenter and if we stay focused on his love for St. George’s, we too can “Make Space for God to Act”.

FLOWER GUILD
Coordinator:
Christy Kellner

The 1999 floral Committee consisted of four floral arrangers, one donations recorder, and ten to twelve floral deliverers. They did not have any floral meetings.

The 2000 floral committee consists of three floral arrangers, along with four new volunteers arrangers, and the existing floral deliverers.

We will have our first meeting on February 6th.  Our main goal is to get the four new volunteers up to speed. During our first meeting, along with Father Ogle we will set our future goals for the Year 2000.
